Virtual Private Servers are virtual machines, running on an enterprise-class physical hardware server. Using Virtual Machine technology allows multiple systems to be booted at once on one physical machine. So with a Virtual Private Server, you have all the benefits of a dedicated server, or a co-located server, but without so much of the cost. You can for example have root level shell access to the server, you can install your software or updates as desired, or run cPanel or Plesk if you are a web designer or hosting reseller.
